Let Me Down FLAC Abandoned may be Defeater's first offering for revered punk label Epitaph, but the Boston-based hardcore group show little evidence of a career makeover. Since their 2008 debut, Travels, frontman Derek Archamault and his four companions have continued to develop their sprawling conceptual narrative concerning the lives of an unnamed blue-collar family set in post-WWII New Jersey. There's something comforting about Defeater's unwavering commitment to their ongoing saga and the fact that, after four solid albums dedicated to building up the story line, they didn't simply use their Epitaph deal to hit the reset button and start anew. On the other side of the coin, delivering five consecutive albums about the same fictional family risks redundancy and it's debatable that they might have done themselves a favor by ditching the concept or, at the very least, inventing a fresh one. As it is, Defeater once again revisit their mid-century plot vehicle, delivering a fifth chapter that is largely focused on a Catholic priest character tormented by his lapsed faith. Befitting its tormented subject, the self-produced Abandoned is predictably dark and punishing with Archamault's powerful voice shredding its way through tormented hardcore paeans like "Spared in Hell," "Divination," and "Penance." While this may not represent a great shift in Defeater's overall sound, they still dig into the material with vigor and passion. Bookended by a pair of moody cuts replete with intoned prayers spoken in the background, Abandoned plays to the severity of the Catholic faith, and if Defeater's thematic tendencies have begun to wear a bit thin, they still manage to pack a pretty big punch on a musical level. ~ Timothy Monger (Album review from TiVo) Boston, Massachusetts hardcore group Defeater originally formed in 2004, and, after some lineup changes, eventually landed on vocalist Derek Archambault, guitarists Jay Maas and Jake Woodruff, bassist Mike Poulin, and drummer Joe Longobardi by 2008. Conceptually-inclined from the very beginning, their debut album, Travels (2008), introduced a narrative which chronicled an unnamed, post-WWII working-class family and their complicated, dysfunctional relationships. Initially signed to Topshelf, Defeater moved to Bridge Nine Records to release their next two LPs, Empty Days & Sleepless Nights (2011) and Letters Home (2013), each of which provided a new chapter in the fictional family's overarching storyline. In 2015, the band signed with Epitaph Records to release their fourth album, Abandoned. ~ Timothy Monger & Jason Lymangrover
  4. Genre - Indie, Rock, Pop, Alternative Quality - FLAC (tracks) [24/bit |44,1 / 48.0 kHz *] 2018 - Petaluma * 2016 - Low Tides 2014 - Clouded Biography California-based indie duo This Wild Life shed their initial full-band ambitions, successfully retooling their emo/pop-punk style into an acoustic format in 2014 with their Epitaph debut, Clouded. From their beginning as D.I.Y. up-and-comers to label-supported hard-touring festival attraction, co-singer/songwriters Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso have consistently shown a interest in creative expansion and evolution, moving from electric phase to stripped-down acoustic, and later to a mix that included orchestral ambitions. After working together at a local music store, Jordan and Del Grosso bonded over the hardcore, punk, and screamo bands they loved as teenagers. They assembled the first version of This Wild Life in 2011 as an electric guitar-led quartet playing in an upbeat, familiar pop-punk style. After finding some modest local success, Jordan and Del Grosso decided to take a different approach to their music. Inspired by the passionate acoustic emo of Dashboard Confessional's Swiss Army Romance album, they recast themselves as a duo armed with two acoustic guitars and their strong harmonies. Feeling more inspired than ever, they continued to write in the melodic pop-punk milieu, but sharpened their focus on tight, succinct songwriting that spent less time hiding behind a heavy wall of sound. Their second release, 2012's Heart Flip, partially reflected this sea change with a mix of full-band tracks alongside the new stripped-down acoustic songs. They found that it was actually the acoustic songs that received the biggest responses both in the punk community and beyond. They shifted completely into an acoustic act, touring and building a hearty grassroots following and eventually inking a deal with legendary punk label Epitaph. For their full-length debut, Clouded, they worked with producer Aaron Marsh of the band Copeland, fleshing out their nimble acoustic tunes with additional harmonies, strings, and various other organic adornments. Following the album's June 2014 release, they hit the road as part of the Vans Warped Tour, playing alongside heroes like Yellowcard and the Story So Far. Working again with Aaron Marsh, This Wild Life recorded their follow-up, Low Tides, which was released by Epitaph in Autumn 2016 and featured slightly heavier arrangements than their debut. Heading into sessions for their third album, Jordan and Del Grosso mutually decided to take a brighter, more upbeat approach to their writing. The resulting album, 2018's Petaluma, explored a lighter tone with hopeful themes. ~ Timothy Monger

Throw Me To The Lions (03:18) 13. Krystalline (03:29) FLAC Album Review Recapturing the spirit of earlier recordings, Chicago punk stalwarts Alkaline Trio polish those rough edges of youthful messiness and hit an effortless stride with ninth album Is This Thing Cursed? At its boisterous best, Cursed soars with the trademark harmonies of Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano, popping with an energy that recalls past peaks like 2000's Maybe I'll Catch Fire and 2001's From Here to Infirmary. Like contemporaries AFI and Rise Against, age and experience have smoothed out the band's delivery (Skiba's stint with blink-182 could also be a contributing factor), resulting in less danger and gloom. However, Cursed is ultimately an enjoyable ride, packed with rousing anthems such as "Blackbird," "Demon and Division," "Pale Blue Ribbon," and "Little Help?" The rollicking "Worn So Thin" and "Throw Me to the Lions" amplify the urgency to a fever pitch, much like 2003's "We've Had Enough." Elsewhere, the Triotake aim at topical issues, tackling anti-Trump despair on the frustrated "I Can't Believe" and lamenting the high-profile failure of the 2017 Fyre Festival on "Goodbye Fire Island." Over two decades into their career, Alkaline Trio sound like they're simply having a good time making serviceable adult-oriented punk rock, adding a few gems to an already stacked catalog. ~ Neil Z. Broken Compass 04:11 FLAC Album Review The debut from ex-Underoath frontman Spencer Chamberlain's new project with longtime friend and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Bowman, Broken Compass flirts with the breakdown-laden minefield that served as the theater of war for his former group, while introducing a significant amount of '90s industrial metal into the mix that suggests a post-breakup binge on bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Filter, and especially Nine Inch Nails — Chamberlain sounds like he's exorcizing some demons with Sleepwave, and he's doing so in the style that comforts him the most. Underoath fans needn't worry though, as the band never really yields to the narcotic-induced capacity that its moniker would suggest, due in large part to Chamberlain's powerful voice and penchant for shoehorning in frequent bouts of neck-snapping brutality amidst all of the explosive and anthemic choruses and sweeping keyboard-driven vistas. Still, Sleepwave is a far more modern rock radio-ready beast than its predecessor, and songs like the soaring "Hold Up My Head," the evocative "Through the Looking Glass" and like-minded title cut, and the meaty, fist-pumping single "Paper Planes" harbor as many commercial aspirations as they do resentments — Chamberlain was admittedly rocked by his former band's breakup — but despite their retro-industrial trappings, they retain a great deal of the emotional heft that made Underoath so accessible. ~ James Christopher Monger (Album review from TiVo)
